Is White Smoke from the Exhaust Something to Worry About

I’ve noticed something a bit strange with my DS recently, and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Lately, there’s been a lot of white smoke (or maybe steam?) and dampness coming from the exhaust. At first, I figured it was just because the weather’s getting colder, and maybe the engine wasn’t warmed up enough.

But a few days ago, after driving about 30 km, I stopped at a gas station. By that point, the engine should’ve been fully warmed up, but I still noticed the white smoke and dampness before shutting the engine off to refuel. Now I’m starting to wonder if this is normal, or if it’s something I should have checked out.

Has anyone else had this happen with their DS, especially as the weather cools? Could it just be condensation, or does it sound like a bigger issue?

Typically, white smoke indicates a blown head gasket. Check the oil dipstick for coolant contamination. If it's bad, you'll have to replace the head gasket.

Right! Check the underside of the oil cap. If you see any white or yellowish gunk, it could mean condensation or coolant is getting into the oil. This could be a sign of a blown head gasket, which can seriously damage your engine. Get it checked out right away.

White smoke could just be condensation, but since it’s happening after a 30 km drive, it might be more than that. It could be something simple like moisture buildup in the exhaust, especially in colder weather. But if it smells sweet or if your coolant level is dropping, it might be worth having a mechanic check for a possible coolant leak.

Seeing some steam in cold weather is normal, it shouldn't happen after the engine is warm. It might just be leftover moisture, but it could also signal a coolant leak or a head gasket problem. Coolant leaks cause white smoke and often have a sweet smell. if it keeps happening, take your car to a mechanic. They can check the coolant and do a pressure test to make sure there's no serious engine problem. It's best to get it checked out to avoid potential issues.
